These children are in a dead end situation — poor conditions at home, no chance of a job when they leave school. — Эти дети в безнадёжной ситуации — ужасные условия дома, нет шансов на получение работы, когда они закончат школу.

'The Dead End Kids' («Дети без надежды») была популярной группой молодых американских киноактёров в 1930—40-е гг., игравших в фильмах, действие которых происходило в Восточной части Нью-Йорка, где грязные трущобы соседствовали с роскошными квартирами в богатых домах.
